E-file an IRS personal tax extension with TaxExtension.com
The State of West Virginia recognizes the Federal tax extension (IRS Form 4868). Therefore, if you have a valid Federal extension, you will automatically be granted a corresponding West Virginia tax extension for the same amount of time. A Federal extension gives you 6 extra months to file, which means that the deadline for filing your West Virginia tax return will be extended to October 15. Make sure to attach a copy of your approved Federal extension to your West Virginia return when it’s filed.
If you do not have a Federal extension, or if you owe West Virginia income tax, you can obtain a state extension using West Virginia Schedule L (Application for Extension of Time to File). Do not file Schedule L if you have a valid Federal extension and you owe zero West Virginia tax.
A tax extension only gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. Your West Virginia tax liability must be paid by the original deadline (April 15) to avoid interest and penalties. You can make a West Virginia extension payment using Schedule L, or by going online to the Electronic Filing and Services portal.
