State of Tennessee Personal Income Tax Extensions

E-file an IRS personal tax extension with TaxExtension.com

General Instructions

The State of Tennessee does not tax wage income, but residents are subject to tax on their dividends and interest income. Tennessee individual income tax returns are due by April 15 in most years. If you cannot file by this date, you can request a Tennessee tax extension.

A Tennessee personal extension will give you 6 more months to file your return, moving the due date to October 15. However, an extension of time to file is NOT an extension of time to pay. Your Tennessee income tax must be paid by the original deadline (April 15) to avoid penalties and interest.

To request a state tax extension, use Tennessee Form INC-251 (Application for Extension of Time to File Individual Income Tax Return). If you owe Tennessee tax, you should include an extension payment with Form INC-251. You also have the option of filing and paying your tax extension online via the Tennessee “etax” system: apps.tn.gov/etax
