Louisiana personal income tax returns are due by the 15th day of the 5th month following the end of the tax year. For calendar year taxpayers, this date is May 15. If you cannot file on time, you can get a Louisiana tax extension.
A Louisiana personal extension will give you 6 more months to file, moving the due date to November 15 (for calendar year filers). Your extension request must be submitted by the original deadline of your return (May 15).
The State of Louisiana no longer provides or accepts paper extension requests. All Louisiana taxpayers are now required to apply for a tax extension electronically. You can submit a personal extension request online using one of the following applications:
• Louisiana Individual Income Online Tax Filing
• Louisiana Online Extension Filing
Note that a tax extension only gives you extra time to file, not to pay. Your Louisiana tax balance must be paid by the original due date (May 15) to avoid interest and penalties. If you want to mail your payment via check or money order, use Louisiana Form R-2868V (Individual Income Tax, Electronically Filed Extension Payment Voucher). If you want to make an electronic extension payment, you can do that using one of the above links (Louisiana Individual Income Online Tax Filing or Louisiana Online Extension Filing).
