Use Form 1027 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File a Delaware Individual Income Tax Return) to get a tax extension from the State of Delaware. Make sure to submit your Delaware tax extension by the original deadline of your return (April 30). Form 1027 can be filed by paper mail or electronically via Delaware Online Services.
Keep in mind, a state tax extension does not give you more time to pay your Delaware income tax. You will need to make a tax payment with your Delaware extension request to avoid being charged penalties and interest. State tax payments can be made electronically using Delaware Online Services (see above link) or mailed with Form 1027.
If you have a valid Federal extension and you owe no tax to the State of Delaware, you will automatically receive a state extension — no form or application is required. But if you’re unsure whether there will be a balance owed on your state income tax return, it’s recommended that you file Form 1027 for an extension.
