State of Alabama Personal Income Tax Extensions

E-file an IRS personal tax extension with TaxExtension.com

General Instructions

If you cannot file your Alabama tax return by the due date, you do not need to file for a state tax extension. The Alabama Department of Revenue will automatically grant you a 6-month extension. This means that you do not have to submit a paper or electronic tax extension form in order to obtain the automatic extension.

If you expect to owe income tax on your return, you must submit your tax payment by the original due date using Alabama Form 40V (Individual Income Tax Payment Voucher). A tax extension will only prevent you from incurring a late filing penalty for your return. However, interest and penalties may be assessed on any tax not paid by the original filing deadline (April 15).

Note that you cannot get a tax extension for more than 6 months, except in certain cases for overseas taxpayers.
