File Your Tax Return Now →The District of Columbia takes a different approach from most jurisdictions: DC does not accept the federal IRS extension. Residents who need more time to file their DC personal income tax return must file Form FR-127 (Extension of Time to File a DC Income Tax Return) directly with the DC Office of Tax and Revenue. Filing IRS Form 4868 alone does nothing for your DC deadline.
Filing IRS Form 4868 will not extend your DC filing deadline. You must file Form FR-127 separately with the DC Office of Tax and Revenue by April 15, 2026.
DC’s extension is for filing only. Submit full payment of your estimated DC tax liability with Form FR-127 by April 15, 2026, or penalties and interest will accrue.
Form FR-127 can be filed online through MyTax.DC.gov or mailed with payment to the Office of Tax and Revenue. The form must be submitted by April 15, 2026. If you are uncertain of your exact DC tax liability, estimate it and pay as much as possible – submitting Form FR-127 without full payment can still result in penalties and interest on any unpaid balance from the original due date.
DC imposes a 5% per month penalty on unpaid tax for failure to file, capped at 25%. The failure-to-pay penalty is an identical 5% per month, also capped at 25%. Both penalties run simultaneously if no extension is filed and no payment is made – making early action especially important for DC taxpayers.
DC’s extension process requires deliberate action – the federal extension provides no relief here. File Form FR-127 with full payment by April 15, 2026, and use MyTax.DC.gov for the fastest, most secure payment experience. Missing this step means your DC filing deadline stays at April 15, regardless of any federal extension you hold.
