Indiana Personal Income Tax Extension – No Federal Extension Required – Up to 7 Months

Indiana is one of the most generous states for extension filers. Taxpayers who secure a federal extension through IRS Form 4868 automatically receive the standard six-month extension – plus an additional 30 days, giving Indiana taxpayers until November 16, 2026 to file. No separate Indiana extension form is required when you have a federal extension. Alternatively, Indiana taxpayers without a federal extension can request the extension directly via INTIME (intime.dor.in.gov) or by filing Form IT-9 by April 15. Payment, however, remains due by April 15.

Unique Deadline

File by November 16, 2026

Indiana adds 30 days beyond the standard federal extension period – one of the longest filing windows in the country. Federal extension required to activate it.

Payment Deadline

Pay Any Balance by April 15, 2026

The extended filing deadline does not move the payment due date. Pay at least 90% of your Indiana income tax by April 15 to avoid the late-payment penalty. Interest accrues on any unpaid balance after April 15; the remaining balance (plus interest) must be paid by November 16.

File IRS Form 4868 first: Indiana’s November 16 deadline is triggered by a valid federal extension. No federal extension? Request Indiana’s extension directly via INTIME (intime.dor.in.gov) or by mailing Form IT-9 before April 15 – you still get the November 16 deadline.

Using Form IT-9

Form IT-9 (Application for Extension of Time to File) is used to request an extension of time to file and/or mail an extension payment to Indiana. If paying online through INTIME, no paper form is needed. INTIME supports both ACH/e-check (no fee) and credit/debit card payments.

Late Filing and Payment Penalties

Indiana imposes a 10% penalty on unpaid tax for both failure to file and failure to pay. Because both penalties share the same rate and can apply simultaneously, missing both obligations could result in penalties of up to 20% of unpaid tax. Filing by November 16 and paying by April 15 eliminates all exposure.

Best Practices

  • Activate Indiana’s November 16 deadline by April 15 – either via a federal Form 4868, or directly through INTIME or Form IT-9.
  • Pay any Indiana balance by April 15, 2026, using INTIME (intime.dor.in.gov) or Form IT-9 by mail.
  • Use INTIME for ACH/e-check payments – no fees and instant confirmation.
  • File your completed Indiana return by November 16, 2026.

Indiana’s extra 30 days beyond the federal window makes it one of the most taxpayer-friendly states for extension filers. Activate your extension by April 15 (federal Form 4868, INTIME, or Form IT-9), pay at least 90% of your liability, and take advantage of the full November 16 filing window.
