State of New Jersey Personal Income Tax Extensions

E-file an IRS personal tax extension with TaxExtension.com

General Instructions

New Jersey personal income tax returns are due by the 15th day of the 4th month after the end of the tax year (April 15 for calendar year filers). If you cannot file by that date, you can request a New Jersey tax extension.

It’s important to note that a state tax extension only applies to filing your return. There is no New Jersey extension for the payment of tax due. To avoid interest and penalties, make sure to pay your New Jersey income tax by the original deadline of your return (April 15).

A New Jersey personal extension will give you 6 extra months to file, moving the filing deadline to October 15 (for calendar year taxpayers). You will only be granted a New Jersey extension if at least 80% of your state income tax liability is paid by the original due date (April 15).

A New Jersey tax extension can be obtained by first filing a Federal tax extension (IRS Form 4868). If you have a valid Federal extension, you will automatically be granted a New Jersey extension. You must attach a copy of your Federal extension to your New Jersey tax return when it’s filed.

If you do not have a Federal tax extension, you can request a New Jersey extension using Form NJ-630 (Application for Extension of Time to File New Jersey Gross Income Tax Return). Form NJ-630 must be filed by the original due date of your return (April 15). If you owe New Jersey tax, you must submit Form NJ-630 with payment in order to satisfy the 80% extension requirement, whether or not you have a valid Federal extension.

NOTE: Do not file Form NJ-630 if you have an approved Federal extension and you’ve paid at least 80% of your state tax liability.
