Receive a Tracking Number

What is a DCN?

A DCN is a "Declaration Control Number" and is assigned by our system when we generate your IRS extension e-file record. IRS recognizes this number as proof that you have requested an extension and can verify its existence within their computer systems.

The DCN is similar to the "tracking #s" assigned by couriers such as UPS and Federal Express because it offers an audit-trail of your extension request.

When we e-file your extension, we will e-mail your DCN to you. In addition, future e-mails we send regarding your extension's acknowledgement by IRS will contain this DCN.

Are DCNs available for paper-filed extensions

No. The IRS may send you a paper acknowledgement of your extension or they may not.

Can I use my DCN to track my extension request?

Yes. If your extension request is not acknowledged by IRS within 24-48 hours, you may contact them at 800-829-1040 to inquire about its status.
