E-file an IRS personal tax extension with TaxExtension.com
South Carolina individual income tax returns are due by the 15th day of the 4th month after the end of the tax year. For calendar year taxpayers, this date is April 15. If you cannot file on time, you can get a 6-month South Carolina tax extension.
The State of South Carolina recognizes the Federal tax extension (IRS Form 4868). If you have a valid Federal extension and you expect a South Carolina tax refund, you will automatically receive a South Carolina extension for the same period of time. Make sure to attach a copy of your Federal extension to your South Carolina tax return when it’s filed.
If you do not have a valid Federal extension, you must file South Carolina Form SC4868 (Request for Extension of Time to File South Carolina Individual Income Tax Return) by the original deadline of your return (April 15). Remember to attach a copy of your state extension to your South Carolina return when it’s filed.
A tax extension gives you more time to file, but it does not give you more time to pay. In order to be approved for a state extension, at least 90% of your South Carolina tax must be paid by the original due date (April 15). You can submit an extension payment with Form SC4868, or with a copy of Federal Form 4868 marked “For South Carolina.” Note that any outstanding state tax balance will be subject to interest and penalties.
During certain times of the year, you can file and pay your South Carolina tax extension online via “SCnetFile” under Electronic Services for Individuals: www.sctax.org/Electronic+Services/FastFile
