E-file an IRS personal tax extension with

General Instructions

New York personal income tax returns are due by April 15 (for calendar year taxpayers). If you cannot file by that date, you can get a state tax extension.

To request a New York tax extension, use Form IT-370 (Application for Automatic Six‑Month Extension of Time to File for Individuals). Form IT-370 must be submitted by the original deadline of your return (April 15). The State of New York requires personal tax extensions to be requested electronically via their Online Services system:

NOTE: Fiscal year taxpayers seeking a tax extension should contact the New York Department of Taxation and Finance by telephone. See the following link for contact phone numbers:

A tax extension gives you more time to file, but not more time to pay your New York tax. You are required to make full payment of your estimated New York tax balance when you request a tax extension. If you want to mail your extension payment, you can contact the NY Department of Taxation and Finance for a paper version of Form IT-370-V (Payment Voucher). Otherwise, extension payments should be made electronically through the Department of Taxation and Finance:
